SULPHUR AEON's latest offering is blessed with contrasts, sonic ebbs and flows. A typhoon of angular riffs and wild blast beats, sophisticated melodic layers, dense atmosphere and triumphantly sung choruses sweep you away. Ethereal acoustic guitars, subtle synths, a touch of goth ('The Yearning Abyss Devours Us'), rich leads, e-bow parts, fierce aggression ('Arcane Cambrian Sorcery'), monumental heaviness that flows into hypnotic vocal patterns ('Seven Crowns And Seven Seals'), and a grand finale ('Beneath The Ziqqurrats') - "Seven Crowns And Seven Seals" transcends genres; it rages and destroys, lulls you into dangerously deceptive calm the next moment, only to irretrievably drag you into the dark whirlpool of the ocean. SULPHUR AEON master their piercing cinematic death metal of the highest order, going beyond themselves and yet sounding unmistakably coherent - perfectly captured and refined by long-time collaborators Simon Werner and Michael Zech (Secrets Of The Moon, Bølzer etc.), while the mastering was handled by V. Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress). As for the artwork, SULPHUR AEON have broken with tradition this time to work with Ola Larsson again and teamed up with Italian Paolo Girardi to depict a Lovecraftian apocalypse that counters the opulence and dynamics of the album with a rougher style.
SULPHUR AEON's "Seven Crowns And Seven Seals" is the obvious and - at least for now - possibly the pinnacle of a band obsessed with their creativity, passionately and willingly taking on the challenge of producing music as timeless and original as the literary legacy of H.P. Lovecraft. Plunge into the dark waters and let the ocean's tide engulf you...
