The Awesome Tapes From Africa label began reissuing "Nahawa Doumbia's Vol. 3" over 10 years ago, launching a successful series of classic and new recordings from artists across Africa available to the international market for the first time. ATFA enables artists to expand their fan base and revenue streams with legally licensed recordings and a 50/50 profit split. For its 50th release, ATFA presents the beloved "Vol. 2" by Malian singer Nahawa Doumbia. Released on LP in 1982 and until now unavailable outside of Mali, "Vol. 2" is an intimate yet powerful document of the early efforts of one of Mali's most enduring voices. Four decades later, Doumbia continues to tour the world, captivating audiences with her haunting vocals, accompanied by her partner, guitarist N'gou Bagayoko. "Vol. 2" is simple in its instrumentation—just voice and acoustic guitar—but powerful in its sonic impact. This recording, painstakingly extracted from the LP and remastered by longtime ATFA engineer Jessica Thompson, has been prepared for wider release for the first time. The master recording no longer exists, and the original was pressed in relatively poor quality, compounding the difficulty of presenting "Vol. 2" with good sound. This historic recording was worth the effort. Doumbia's voice soars above Bagayoko's guitar as she presents her plaintive approach to the relevant issues of the time. The surround sound could be considered a third instrument, as its form and sonic impact are clearly audible throughout. The simplicity of this recording only enhances the immediacy of these four songs.
