MONO are often portrayed as the Japanese answer to other post-rock bands like EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY or MOGWAI, as their sound, similar to that of their colleagues, relies on a mix of clean guitar melodies, deafening walls of sound, delicate, sensitive drumming, and the occasional string arrangement. The "head cinema" familiar from their predecessor, "Walking Cloud And Deep Red Sky" (produced by Steve Albini), opens its doors once again on "You Are There." The sinister heaviness of the highly acclaimed 2002 album, "One Step More And You Die," also comes through. With "You Are There," MONO impressively refutes the myth that an increased focus on complex song structures and string arrangements always results in the loss of all youthful energy and inspired aggression. Even after thorough absorption, there are no signs of wear and tear! MONO are definitely one of the five best post-rock bands.
