Here’s an oddity if there ever was one – an experimental drone record made from snippets of experimental drone records released on Nonesuch in the 60s and 70s. It probably shouldn’t work, but the deft touch Damian Valles adds to his compositions belies the subject matter and the result is an expert, dusty, hauntological ride through times past. I’m reminded of Tim Hecker (the doomy soundscapes) and Indignant Senility (the crackling nostalgia) but neither artist has ever produced a record so monolithically static. The traces of the past can be heard, but they have been reformed into blackened slabs not unlike the molasses-slow bass warbles of Sunn o))).
