Arthur's Landing are a tribute act to the late, great Arthur Russell, comprising a rotating assembly of former collaborators and friends who were lucky enough to work with the hugely influential downtown disco/avant garde auteur. Late in 2010 their first recorded taste was released through Brennan Green's Chinatown label, reworking 'Is It All Over My Face' as 'Love Dancing', and Brennan is behind the mixing desk for this 12 track album, led by guitarist Steven Hall and featuring notable contributions from Russell's longtime allies Peter Zummo, Elodie Lauten, Mustafa Ahmed, Ernie Brooks, Bill Ruyle and Joyce Bowden, plus extra guests. Working with such venerated material was always going to be tricky but the cast navigate between previously unheard songs and classic material with an assured and steady hand, rarely trying to better it, but representing his music with the tender love and refreshed attention it deserves. You'll find reworks of the perenially popular, heart-stopping classics 'This Is How We Walk On The Moon', 'In The Light Of The Miracle' and the aforementioned 'Love Dancing' included next to vibing revisions of little known tracks such as 'Singing Tractors', 'Go For The Night' and 'I Want To Change My Life', all unified with a smokily spacious and reverently downbeat mood. There are plans afoot to release remix, live and acoustic albums featuring various Arthur's Landing side projects but for now this one is warmly nudged to fans of the man.
