He was born in Chemnitz, a city that was at the heart of the East German textile industry, and has amassed a collection of over 1,000 historical textile patterns. So he was the obvious choice to collaborate with Hoosoo, a gallery in Kyoto that's been producing textiles since the 17th century. The main piece featured here is the soundtrack from 'Wave Weave', a short video work that Nicolai directed to capture Hosoo's unique weaving process and magnify the loom's machinery, showing the "algorithms and temporality embedded in textiles." Funnily enough, the imagery isn't too far removed from patterns Nicolai has been toying with for decades: dense, complex matrices of lines and geometric shapes that he shadows with his suitably austere glitches and elegant tones.

But this isn't a particularly gloomy offering; far from it, in fact. Nicolai is sentimental about the subject matter and meets the textiles with awe-inspiring swells and pads, adding faint, mechanical rhythms only when necessary. 'Sono Obi Landscape', meanwhile, was made by converting the musical portion into sonograms, then using those images to create textiles. We can hear the sound on this release (and spy the accompanying visual work) and it follows its predecessor nearly, decelerating the rhythms and bringing out some of the more atmospheric tonal qualities. Honestly, it's the closest Nicolai has ever sounded to Boards of Canada.
