It’s a trip. But not in the sense of substance abuse. Also not in the sense of a transformational quest, where you chase something only to find out that in the end it was all about the friends you made along the way. The Disney trip. (Even if that goes a bit more into the direction of what it is.) Nor the Disney Cruise™, where you would get on a ship, leave reality behind and just enjoy what’s offered.
It’s a trip where you pack a few belongings and never come back. Traveling light. You got your Mirror, Bandaid, Chewing Gum and Lighter – the latter one making it impossible to travel by plane. So by foot it is, slow and steady. Everything is marked by a certain forwardness. Even if there is no home that you can inhabit, it does not mean that anything has to be stressful. Small treasures can be found here and there – yet it’s always about the trip itself. Transformation may happen, but not in a flashy way.
This release marks 13YC’s fourth studio album in their band history. Over the years the sound, the form and the colours were always changing and ever evolving. From well produced subtleties to noise, fuzz and rock’n’roll to a more condensed version of all the above. From songs to mathy concepts to long form dives. From synths and vibraphone to raw bass to custom built everything.
What stayed the same is the very direct energy that comes from playing live and that translates to all the albums. ‘13YC’ is one form of one band, but even if it’s self titled, it’s not coming to terms with something or is a quintessential wrap-up. This is just a snapshot of where they are right now. On the move, meditative but never at ease.
