Kang is known for his explorations of microtonality, modal improvisation, and sound ritual. His works have been presented at leading festivals and venues worldwide. Kang is currently a faculty member at CalArts, teaching composition and experimental sound practices. For over thirty years, Eyvind Kang has explored the blurred boundaries between composer, performer, and listener. On Riparian, he presents one of his most intimate and focused works to date: two long-form pieces for viola d'amore, improvised within microtonal systems he developed during the pandemic. Kang calls this improvisational method "riparian," evoking the image of a river being crossed in different directions—flowing, nonlinear, and vibrant with subtle variations. "I imagined pizzicato and arco as jumping from stone to stone in a stream," he says. "There's a grounded randomness, like a frog or a turtle moving between land and water." Each piece on Riparian is a first take, recorded in the studio as part of what Kang describes as "a kind of storytelling among like-minded friends."
