“Ptitsi pajut” is an idea that has been buzzing in Susanna Leppänen’s head for about seven years, and it has now taken shape. Elias Lönnrot’s Kanteletar and other traditional poetry has inspired Leppänen to compose songs about birds, especially about the different shades of death, in addition to stories about them. The richness and rhythm of the older and more poetic Finnish language have tempted Leppänen to boldly experiment with different ways of composing songs. Folk poems inevitably turn music into larger, progressive works. More songs about birds were written, and Leppänen performed them solo, sometimes accompanying herself on the accordion. The songs on the album were crafted and arranged to look like a band, and they became the music of this band.
The songs were created airy and lively, even though they are about death. They also lived in Susanna Leppänen & Vallitseva tilsinta for a year and a half at gigs, and in their final form they were recorded live in February-March 2022 at Susanna's safe haven in Vastingi, Karstula, in Mattila, in the warmth of her father's childhood home.
Susanna Leppänen & Vallitseva tilsinta is Leppänen's music, which the current situation has made heard. The music treads the landscape of traditional poems and everyday threats, ridiculous life and inevitable death. Susanna Leppänen & Vallitseva tilsinta is country(air) music, death gospel and accordion humor.
