Ora Cogan's "Formless," released on August 25, 2023, is an album that finds beauty, absurdity, humor, and unexpected joy in the darkest of times. "Formless" was created amidst grief and pandemic-induced isolation. "I spent a lot of time wandering aimlessly through the woods with my dog," Cogan said. The result is a flood of musings about clumsy love, pain, inner struggles, and the fight to find ways to feel good when everything is going wrong. The album was recorded largely in live takes with rhythm section David Proctor and Finn Smith on analog tape at Risque Disque Studio on Vancouver Island and co-produced by Cogan and David Parry of Loving. It features international guest stars such as Cormac Mac Diarmada of Lankum, who plays "Feel Life" on string guitar, and Y La Bamba, who duets on "Ways of Losing." The album is thematically diverse: "Katie Cruel," with its ethereal vocals, a shuffling snare, and a sitar-like guitar, is a tragic ballad about a sex worker traveling with light infantry soldiers. "Cowgirl" is a psychedelic, slow country jam that explores social isolation in grief; and "Feel Life" is a track that dances through the madness of everyday turmoil and epic, life-changing losses. With a unique voice that is as sensational as it is sonorous, Ora Cogan searches for new realities in the labyrinth of smoke and mirrors of our cruel society.
