After the surprising success of his previous album, "The Doctor Came At Dawn," Bill Callahan teamed up with some Chicago musicians to record this album. They managed to create an atmospheric, slightly country-esque mood around Callahan's voice, creating a concept album about the color red (song titles include "Blood Red Bird," "Red Apples," "Red Apple Falls," etc.). It's very stripped-down and haunting, but for the most part, truly accessible, which isn't always the case with his other works. It's somewhere between Leonard Cohen and Bonnie Prince Billy. Brilliant!
