Philly sound poet and artist Moor Mother joins flutist Nicole Mitchell and pianist Nduduzo Makhathini for One For Archie: a record originally conceived after the cancellation of a planned 2023 Enjoy Jazz Festival performance with Archie Shepp, saxophonic constant of avant-garde jazz. The piece grew into a spontaneous homage to the key saxist's radical, nickel-plated oeuvre; Moor Mother threads the names of Shepp's 60s milestones into a densely woven poetic structure, while Mitchell and Makhathini extend her phrases into a setlist of ceremony and soul-searching. The title nods to Shepp's 1964 debut Four For Trane, itself a defining modern jazz document. On The B, 'They've Got A Plan' invokes the African Union's "Agenda 2063," linking continental renewal to jazz's continuing global dialogue.
